Why We Love Comfort Food in Winter

As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, many of us naturally gravitate toward meals that feel like a warm embrace. There’s actually science behind this craving for comfort food. During colder months, our bodies work harder to maintain warmth, often leading to an increased appetite for hearty, calorie-dense dishes. But it’s not just about physical warmth—there’s an emotional connection too.

Comfort food has a unique way of boosting our mood, thanks to its nostalgic and satisfying qualities. These dishes often remind us of family dinners, holidays, or a simpler time when life felt a little more carefree. The smell of a bubbling pot of stew or the first bite of creamy mac and cheese can instantly transport you back to cherished memories.

Moreover, the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), can make us feel a little less energetic or happy. Foods rich in carbs and fats, like a warm bowl of pasta or a decadent chocolate dessert, can increase serotonin levels in the brain, helping us feel more content and balanced.

Tips for Perfect Winter Comfort Food

Use seasonal ingredients for the best flavor.

With the chill of the season, our desire for robust flavors and nourishing meals grows stronger. Luckily, winter brings a bounty of seasonal ingredients perfect for adding depth, richness, and vibrancy to your dishes.

Winter’s seasonal ingredients bring a bounty to your kitchen and are perfect for crafting delicious comfort food recipes. Root vegetables like carrots and parsnips, potatoes, and squash. These earthy, nutrient-packed ingredients thrive in cold weather and shine in soups, stews, and roasts.

Other seasonal ingredients for winter cooking are dark leafy greens, like kale, and collard greens, brussel sprouts, and cabbage. Citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, and pomegranates offer a burst of juiciness and sweetness that contrast wonderfully with winter’s heavier mains.

Invest in a good slow cooker or Dutch oven.

Having the right cooking equipment makes all of the difference in the kitchen.

Check out a few of my favorite Dutch Ovens

A Dutch oven is a deep cast iron pan for stew or braised meat dishes. It’s extremely versatile and comes in various sizes. I like the enamel-coated variety by either Staub or Le Creuset. They are both beautiful, durable workhorses.

Here are a few of my favorite slow cookers

A slow cooker is another kitchen tool that can save you time in the kitchen while creating delicious home-cooked meals. There are so many multi-tools on the market today and they do make life easier.

  • Instant Pot (affiliate link) – This is a slow cooker and a pressure cooker. You really can’t beat this all-in-one cooking tool. It’s affordable and easy to use.
  • Instant Pot Dutch Oven/Slow Cooker (affiliate link) – This is a lesser-known product. It performs much better than the Instant Pot as a Dutch oven but lacks the multi-functionality of the traditional Instant Pot. If you are more of a traditionalist and want a slow cooker capable of braising, this is the better choice for you.
  • Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker (affiliate link) – This one has a defrost function that is helpful for days when you don’t have time to defrost a large roast. This slow cooker is affordable and reliable.
  • Green Pan Elite 8-in-1 Cooker (affiliate link)– This one is a little splurgy but gorgeous and well built. It’s available in various colors and has all the functions you need to create a beautiful meal.

Make extra to freeze for busy nights

One of my favorite kitchen tools ever is a Souper Cubes (affiliate link). These smartly designed silicon trays will help you freeze everything from soup to mac and cheese and even your favorite cookie dough in perfect reheatable portions.

Souper Cubes are even oven-safe for baking mini cakes or loaves of bread.

I cannot say enough about this product. I’ve bought them as gifts for almost everyone in my family.
