This homemade version of this classic appetizer recipe is even more delicious than the packet you mix with sour cream. There’s even an option to add in extra diced shallot and chives, which takes this creamy onion dip to the next level!

Recipe Notes

Making French Onion Dip from scratch is so much better than store-bought because the ingredients are so fresh. The flavor is unmatched!

Onion Dip Ingredients

ingredients that go into french onion dip
  • Onions. Any white or yellow onion works for this onion dip recipe. Yellow onions and sweet onions will give the dip a sweeter flavor.
  • Unsalted butter. You will be caramelizing the onion in a little bit of butter.
  • Sour Cream & Cream Cheese. Daisy sour cream is usually my go-to brand. The cream cheese I’m less picky about.
  • Seasonings. Fresh parsley, onion powder, and salt and pepper.
  • Worcestershire sauce. Adds a little umami.

Making Caramelized Onion Dip

step by step instruction for french onion dip
  1. Caramelize the onions. Slice the onions in half and then in quarters. Slice them thin (I recommend a food processor for this) then add the onions to a heavy skillet with the butter. Cook the onions on medium heat until they are golden brown.
  2. Add the sour cream and the cream cheese. Make sure the cream cheese is at room temp. I usually let the onions cool for half an hour before adding the sour cream and cream cheese. I mix everything together in the skillet.
  3. Season. Add the dried onion, the finely chopped parsley, and the Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Mix. Mix together until everything is well blended.
  5. Serve. Serve with crinkle-cut kettle chips or your favorite kind of potato chips.

Recipe Variations

This dip is a staple in our house and I’ve sometimes tweaked the recipe a bit.

  1. Variation 1: Add in one diced shallot and 1/4 cup of fresh chopped chives. The addition of then uncooked shallot and fresh chives gives you a contrast of the caramelized onion flavor and fresh onion flavor.
  2. Make it spicy: Add in 1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper and/or a little sriracha.
  3. Make it with mayo. You can substitute 1 cup of mayo for the cream cheese. Sour cream is necessary but is you don’t have cream cheese on hand mayonnaise is a good substitute.

Storing

In the extremely rare case that you have any leftovers, this homemade onion dip will keep in the fridge for at least a week.

Store it in an airtight container. Sometimes you might find a little bit of liquid on top. This is normal. Just stir and dip.

FAQs and Expert Tips

Can you freeze french onion dip?

I don’t recommend freezing an appetizer dip that’s made with sour cream. While technically it’s safe to freeze onion dip, it’ll never be the same.

When it thaws the sour cream separates and you end up with something that is nowhere near as delicious as when you first made it.
